Alex was the eldest son of the famous bark painter, Bobby Barrdjaray Nganjmirra. When not in his home Country, Alex attended school at Gunbalanya  (Oenpelli) in Arnhem Land. As Alex grew, he spent more and more time with his father, learning the stories of the past and the laws of the Gunwunjku people.

His paintings are held in many collections throughout Australia, Japan and the USA.
