Molly Napaltjarri Jugadai

DOB: 1954-2011

COUNTRY: Haasts Bluff, Northern Territory

LANGUAGES: Pintupi and Luritja

Maluya Jugadai (Molly) was the eldest daughter of artists Narputta Nangala and Timmy Jugadai Tjungurrayi. Her mother granted Molly permission to paint the story of the massive salt lake, Kaarkurutintya (Lake MacDonald), which is Narputta’s sacred country. Surrounded by the ‘Puli Puli’ (natural rock formations) that Molly paints, the lake is also often depicted during the dry season and is sometimes painted as it appears after heavy rains.

In the mid-1990s, Molly played a significant role in the establishment of the Ikuntji Artists Aboriginal Corporation, and today her paintings are held in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia.
