Sophia Wheeler Tunkin
Country: Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands
DOB: 18 February 2000
Sophia is an exciting, emerging young artist from the APY Lands, and is the daughter of Teresa Baker. She paints Marlilu - a matrilineal ancestor from the creation time, and the ceremonial sites associated with Sophia’s Country. These sacred sites are an important source of freshwater, and are in recognition of ancestral activities referred to as “tjukurrpa”. The concentric circles represent locations used for ceremony sites. The painting represents the physical features of the landscape. This includes the tali (sand-hill) country and the puli (rocky outcrops), creek beds and soakages, as well as bush tucker that is collected whilst moving from one water source to the next.
